Healing through community work

The year has gotten off to a great start with an NYC local planning meeting of Breakers called the NY Breaking Alliance who host sessions and/or produce Breakin events in the area. We welcomed Jiggz and Speedy D to the group, Dates were shared for upcoming events so we can prevent some of the double booking that has happened in the past and the Code of Conduct was handed out to the attendees by Bgirl G.I. Jane. The code of conduct was created by Breakers after a UHHV meeting was held in February of last year to foster unity and cultural awareness in the scene. The need for emotional safety was a priority and a group of Breakers founded the NY Breaking Alliance and began to meet in person and then on Zoom to make a list of agreed points that can be displayed at Breakin sessions to shift personal and group attitudes when training together. If you would like a copy or an orientation please CUDA Culture or Mantis.

BGirl Sick Vic produced her two day event Break Thru, to highlight Mental Health and celebrate the dance and graffiti elements. Day one featured two workshops, one for Bgirls facilitated by Dr. Diane Duggan, Melissa Wu, and Hayley Oliver-Smith and one for Bboys led by Johnny Ray-Vega. Both gatherings included some movement based work as well as useful coping mechanisms and an open discussion to close out the workshops. Day two was a Jam that combined the elements of Graffiti and Breaking. Featured graffiti writers had their artwork displayed, Bboy and physical therapist Mike Fresh provided healing body work to attendees. There were spoken word performances by Bgirl J-La Rok and JD Supreme as well as prizes for Cypher King and Queen.

Stay tuned for more news on these upcoming events for 2024 including Express your Skills in Puerto Rico during Memorial day weekend. CUDA Culture will also have their annual Jam at the Santa Cruzan festival on that same Sunday in Jersey City. We hope you can join us for these or any of the jams this year.
